Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, Lord of Montaigne,1 better known simply as Montaigne, was born on February 28, 1533, and died on September 13, 1592, at the Château de Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne (Dordogne), a French philosopher, humanist, and moralist of the Renaissance, as well as an erudite writer. The Chemin de Montaigne is designed to allow hikers to discover the places that inspired Montaigne in his writing, such as his family castle in Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne, or the city of Bordeaux where he served as a magistrate.

La Closerie is a former hotel-restaurant from 1887 in the heart of France and the village. The famous Chemin du Montaigne going from Sauviat-sur-Vige to Lyon crosses the town of the village. A stone's throw from the cafe, opposite the medieval church, La Closerie has retained the "transit hotel" aspect it was for a century.
