GR®89 Montaigne TrailFrom Lyon (Rhône) to Saint Michel-de-Montaigne (Dordogne) |
|
The trail retraces Michel de Montaigne's return journey in 1581, as he traveled from Rome to become mayor of Bordeaux. Starting in Lyon, the ancient capital of Gaul, the trail climbs towards the Monts du Lyonnais and the Monts du Forez, before descending towards the volcanoes of the Auvergne and the valleys of the Périgord. The landscapes are varied, alternating between dense coniferous forests, high-altitude pastures, and vineyard-covered hillsides. From Roman ruins to the châteaux of the nascent Loire Valley, hikers discover charming towns like Montbrison and Thiers. The path is a sanctuary for mid-mountain flora and fauna; red kites can be seen soaring over heaths of heather and broom, while the undergrowth shelters roe deer and foxes. The adventure ends at the Château de Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne, the very place where the writer wrote his famous Essays in his library-tower.
