Tour of the Sèvre et Maine Vineyards (Vendée, Loire-Atlantique) |
Starting in Montaigu-Vendée, the trail follows the Maine River towards Aigrefeuille and Château-Thébaud, where the Porte-Vue viewpoint offers a breathtaking panorama of the river's meanders. At Saint-Fiacre-sur-Maine, the landscape transforms into a sea of Muscadet vines, highlighting the centuries-old importance of local viticulture. The heritage is brilliantly revealed in Clisson, a medieval town with a Tuscan feel, boasting an imposing castle and red bricks typical of Italian influence. Nature is soothing here, between the shaded banks of the Sèvre Nantaise and the hillsides of Monnières and Gorges. Passing through Cugand and its old fulling mills, you'll discover the industrial history linked to the river's hydraulic power. The return journey towards La Bernardière and Montaigu winds its way between hedgerows and family vineyards.
The region is formed by the valleys of the Sèvre Nantaise and Maine rivers. The landscape is hilly and green, with many fields, forests and villages. The region is rich in biodiversity. The flora consists of oaks, beeches, chestnuts, pines and many other trees and shrubs. The fauna of the Sèvre and Maine region is also rich and varied. The main animal species are deer, wild boar, roe deer, fox, rabbit, pheasant, pigeon, otter, weasel, marten, lizard, frog, beaver, European mink and the greater horseshoe bat. There are also many birds, including swans, ducks, herons and storks.
