Tour of the Arcachon Bay (Gironde) |
Starting from the Winter City of Arcachon, the trail begins with the discovery of the salt marshes and the Teich bird reserve, a true haven of peace for migratory birds. Heading up towards Biganos and Audenge, hikers cross authentic oyster-farming ports with colorful huts, witnesses to centuries-old expertise. The landscape then transforms into a mosaic of mudflats and oyster beds as you approach Andernos-les-Bains, famous for its Gallo-Roman seaside remains. Nature reclaims its rights between Arès and the salt marsh nature reserves, before heading into the maritime pine forests of Lège-Cap-Ferret. The wild coastline then reveals itself, offering spectacular views of the majestic Dune of Pilat and the passes at the bay's entrance. The maritime heritage is powerfully expressed here, between historical lighthouses and the typical seaside architecture of the Belle Époque.
A true jewel of the Gironde, the Arcachon Bay is a lagoon open to the Atlantic where nature dictates its own schedule according to the tides. This unique territory is dominated by the majestic Dune of Pilat, the highest sand formation in Europe, whose ridge offers a striking contrast between the vastness of the ocean and the canopy of the Landes forest. The bay's history is closely linked to oyster farming, with beds stretching as far as the eye can see and colorful wooden huts forming an iconic architectural heritage. Oyster ports, such as those in Gujan-Mestras or L'Herbe, tell the story of centuries of maritime skill and authentic local life. At the heart of this small inland sea, the Bird Island (Île aux Oiseaux) and its famous "cabanes tchanquées" (stilted huts) stand proudly above the waters, symbolizing the fragility of this ecosystem. The Teich bird reserve and ephemeral sandbanks, like the Arguin bank, house a rare wealth of biodiversity, making the bay a sanctuary for migratory birds. Regarding heritage, the Winter City of Arcachon unveils its eccentric 19th-century villas, witnesses to the golden age of the first sea bathing resorts.
