Via Lemovicensis

From Gue-d'Hossus (Ardennes) to Saint-Palais (Pyrenees-Atlantiques)

Way of St. James - Santiago de Compostela

1572km

The Via Lemovicensis, also known as the Way of Limousin or the Way of Vezelay, is one of the four main French routes of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Pilgrims who take this route pass through important cities such as Limoges, where they can admire numerous historical sites and monuments. The Via Lemovicensis mainly follows ancient Roman roads and medieval paths, thus offering pilgrims the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of their ancestors. Pilgrims can also enjoy the natural beauty of the region, including verdant hills and winding rivers. In addition, this route is less frequented than other French pilgrimage routes, offering a more peaceful and intimate experience to pilgrims. The itinerary of the Via Lemovicensis is dotted with important stages. Pilgrims can visit the Abbey of La Madeleine in Vezelay and admire its Romanesque architecture. They can then go to Limoges, a historic city famous for its fine porcelain and enamels. Other important stages include Saint-Leonard-de-Noblat, where pilgrims can visit the Romanesque church of Saint-Leonard and the medieval Valhurie bridge; Rocamadour, a village perched on a cliff with a breathtaking view of the valley; and Cahors, a historic city with a medieval bridge spanning the Lot. The Via Lemovicensis is a magnificent itinerary for pilgrims seeking to live a peaceful and intimate experience while discovering the history and culture of France.
