GR®654 EASTFrom Bergerac (Dordogne) to Montreal-du-Gers (Gers) |
The GR654 East, a variant of the Vézelay route, is an integral part of the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago). This route allowed pilgrims coming from the north to cross the Dordogne River and reach Gascony. The journey begins in the medieval streets of Bergerac, passes through the fortified town of Eymet, and culminates in Montréal-du-Gers, one of the first bastides in the department, characterized by its arcaded square and fortified church. The landscape offers a gentle transition between the Périgord Pourpre (Purple Périgord) and Armagnac regions. Hikers first walk among the vineyards of Monbazillac before venturing into the valleys of Lot-et-Garonne and the cereal plains of Gers. The trail alternates between limestone plateaus, lush orchards, and wooded areas of oak and pine.
