GR®965 On the Huguenots' footsteps

From Le Poët-Laval (Drome) to Geneva (Switzerland)

Chemins de Grandes Randonnees

The GR965 is a pilgrimage in memory of the Huguenots, French Protestants persecuted in the 17th century. In 1685, the Edict of Fontainebleau revoked the Edict of Nantes, which had granted Protestants a degree of religious freedom. The Huguenots were then forced to either convert to Catholicism or flee France. More than 200,000 of them chose exile, seeking refuge in other European countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and England. The exodus of the Huguenots to Protestant countries to escape persecution is a major event in European history. From 1560 to 1760, this diaspora involved more than two hundred thousand Huguenots who took the path of exile out of loyalty to their faith.
