Created at the end of the 18th century to allow customs officers to monitor the coast and combat smuggling, the GR223 long-distance hiking trail crosses the chalk cliffs of the Pays d'Auge region and the vast sandy beaches of the D-Day landings, before reaching the rugged coastline of the Cotentin Peninsula. Honfleur, famous for its Old Port, has inspired many artists, including Claude Monet. The trail passes through Trouville and Deauville, renowned for their Belle Époque villas and rich seaside heritage. It crosses the marshes of the Baie des Veys, skirts the Gatteville lighthouse, and enters the protected site of La Hague, nicknamed "Little Ireland" for its heathlands and dry stone walls. The journey culminates in one of the most beautiful views in the world: the appearance of Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey, a masterpiece of medieval architecture, rising from the sands of the bay.
