GR®430 Saint Regis way (Haute-Loire, Ardeche)

The GR430 long-distance hiking trail pays homage to Jean-François Régis, the "Father of the Poor," who traversed these rugged lands in the 17th century to evangelize rural populations. Vast basalt plains of the Haute-Loire and wooded valleys of the Ardèche Verte offer panoramic views of the Alps and the Mézenc massif. Heritage is omnipresent: Romanesque churches, majestic abbeys like Saint-Chaffre in Le Monastier, and granite houses with slate roofs. Biodiversity is remarkable, with high-altitude meadows rich in spring flora and dense forest fauna. Saint Jean-François Régis, a 17th-century Jesuit, left an indelible mark on the rugged lands of the Haute-Loire and Ardèche. Nicknamed the apostle of Velay and Vivarais, he tirelessly travelled these mountains to bring aid to the poor and reconcile the populations after the Wars of Religion.
